I I half reluctantly sent a long and detailed objection to the Tesco Supermarket, but having spent many years being opposed to supermarkets and their monopoly of the food chain, and the destruction of every town centre in the country (and now village – with Express versions creeping in), decided that I would feel better for doing so. I do feel it is a waste of time, and particularly as there will be many incentives for the Trust and the Council to say yes.
Having successfully ensured the withdrawal of a Premises Licence application(singlehanded) for the Overnight Alcohol Delivery Service which the Council, and the Police thought was such a good idea, I know that it is possible to put up a good case and win. What I would say though, is the criteria for objecting
has to be looked at very carefully, and the arguements equally foreceful.
The latter is where the case can be won, and my suggestion is to show the real impact on real people, from both sides of the fence.
But at the end of the day there is choice, and that is to boycot Tescos,
but I hardly think the great British public will be bothered.

The campaign is already raising some very fundamental questions about the redevelopment of the NGH site. I’d like to keep in touch and have joined the e-mail group.

Well done on the 27th – a good spirited demo.
We have a meeting of the Trades Council this Wednesday (1st October) at the Centre Against Unemployment. If anyone can attend they would be most welcome. I suggest around 7.30. The CAU is at : 4 the Cloth Market, near the foot of the Bigg Market.
Its disgusting that this has crept up again after everyone’s hard work to stop it going ahead. We have a 24 hour tesco garage on the same street thankyou and do not need our hospital destroyed to house an evil and very expensive supermarket chain that I certainly will not visit.Jesmond, put one there, we can’t afford to waste our money here, leave it!!
No we dont have a 24hr Tesco garage on the same street !! Shows how much you know about the area, We have a Tesco Petrol Station/Shop but it is not open 24hs… I really hope Tesco gets to build a store in the West End, it’s what we all want
Whether the existing petrol station and Tesco on West Road is 24hr or not is not really the issue. The proposed Tesco will be 24hr and many local residents are concerned that it will have a huge negative impact on the area (I won’t repeat the concerns, which you can find listed above).
Given that there have been over 1000 objections to the proposed store and only 13 letters of support so far I really don’t think that you can say “it’s what we all want”.
